The Donovan Mitchell Contract

Quick note here before we get started: The free agency live blog is still going strong a week into the festivities. There are only a few truly notable free agents left on the board (LeBron James, obviously, plus James Harden, Draymond Green, and the three restricted free agents in Jalen Duren, Peyton Watson, and Bennedict Mathurin), but that leaves plenty of intrigue still available, and I'll cover those signings in one way or another whenever they happen. LeBron will probably get his own post, while the rest could either wind up in the blog or their own post depending on where they land.

Also, just a reminder that I am offering 25% off all yearly subscriptions between now and the end of the free agency period. I'm going to keep that sale open through at least July 15. Sign up here to get the discount.

All that said, I want to talk briefly about the contract extension to which the Cavaliers are signing Donovan Mitchell. He'll get $273M over four years, according to Shams. Mitchell will decline his $53.8M player option to sign the new deal, which tacks four years onto the one remaining on his current contract. He'll make approximately $60.9M for the 2027-28 season, $65.8M for 2028-29, and $70.7M in 2029-30, then have a $75.5M player option for the 2030-31 campaign, when he'll be 34 years old.
