How are NBA teams being built in 2024?
Literally, how are teams acquiring their players these days?
It’s the offseason, so the on-court stuff in basketball necessarily takes a back seat to the off-court. That’s why this time of year, I often think about team construction. Typically when you hear something like that, you might think about the different kinds of players they have: ball-handlers, shooters, big men, wing defenders, etc.
But teams are also built in specific ways. There are only so many avenues through which you can acquire players. You can draft them, or you can trade for their draft rights. You can sign them in free agency, or you can bring them in with a sign-and-trade. You can claim them off waivers. Or you can just make a regular ole trade and bring them in that way.
With all that in mind, I wanted to take a look at how teams acquired the players currently on their rosters, and how those compositions have changed over time.
